This year, the world will generate 2. What kind of trash is it? Where does it all go? The answer is that just under half of it comes from "organic" waste -- food, mostly -- and most of it goes into landfills, according to a new report this week from the World Bank. Here's that story in pie charts, provided by the report.

The rich, of course. OECD countries make almost half the world's trash. Africa and South Asia produce the least waste. Mostly food and paper. In both rich and poor countries, the vast majority of our waste goes into landfills where it's often covered up.

A very small share of waste in the World Bank's data -- which, the authors admit, was difficult to collect for this category -- went to recycled or composted waste. And a tweetable stat for the road: The typical person in a developed country produces about 2. That would mean the average American man, weighing pounds, produces his weight in trash every three months.

I tried to put these nine items into what-I-despise-most order but I found that kind of ranking simply too difficult. Bottled water or coffee pods? Have we become so helpless that we can no longer measure out the coffee grounds and boil the water? Personally, I enjoy the ritual of brewing coffee in the morning—or tea. Convenience has helped create our current garbage crisis. As these companies and their products seduced and hooked us, we began to abandon basic life skills and grew more dependent on so-called disposable materials. Yes, some coffee pods can be recycled. Nespresso appears to make its pods out of aluminum. Others pods consist of plastic and aluminum.

Theoretically, just about everything can be recycled. And besides, recycling is a last resort. Above all else, refuse trash at its source.

I had never heard of these. Well before I went plastic-free and then zero-waste, I rarely bought plastic wrap. Garbage aside, do you want your food to touch this stuff? The exceptions are wraps used in catering and professional kitchens. Alternatives: Place a plate over a bowl of food to cover it. Buy or make some beeswax wraps. Store food and leftovers in glass jars. Glass food storage offers the additional benefit of a clear view of the food you have on hand.

Yes, plastic baggies make packing lunches convenient but you can find many alternatives. Alternatives: I usually take my lunches to work in glass jars. Wrap up sandwiches in large beeswax wraps.

Making tap water your drink of choice greatly simplifies your life. You buy nothing. You dispose of nothing. Alternative: Tap water. If you choose to filter your water, opt for naked charcoal. Mine came from Miyabi.

Life Without Plastic also sells charcoal water filters. In addition to all the plastic waste that bottled drinks generate, most of them are unhealthy, filled with sugar and like bottled water, have travelled many miles to reach the store.

And while many components of this television dish are authentic, there are several reasons to believe the show might be somewhat staged. Here's why Top Chef won't be certified organic any time soon. One Redditor, called ChoppyChoppy in lieu of a real name, due to non-disclosure agreementshosted an AMA about his or her experience as one of the contestants on the show. ChoppyChoppy said that the host spent most of her non-shooting time in the trailer and that between takes it was "pretty clear" she and Colicchio didn't get along from what was seen during production.

Colicchio all but confirmed the perception of friction between them when he told Time magazine he had "no comment on" the question of whether his long-time co-star acts differently off the air than what viewers see of her.

According to chef Roy Yamaguchiwho competed on Top Chef Masters ' first season, not only is the food prepared by the chefs really prepped in the limited window of time allotted during the competition rounds, but it's also usually pretty good. And the judges do have to eat it — yes, even the chocolate chicken liver disaster Season 2 winner Ilan Hall made that Lakshmi loathed so well.

But there is a key difference between the plates audiences are shown and what the judges nom on while the cameras roll on the results. The chefs also have to prepare two plates of whatever they make so the judges can eat before the dishes get cold and so the crew can have as much time as they need to film.

That's not to say they aren't very similar, of course — they're still the same courses — but photographers admittedly work to make sure the plates we see at home are "as sexy as possible," while the judges are more concerned with the gustatory impact of any given concoction. On the show, the panel judges are the ultimate deciders as to who stays and who Lakshmi tells to "pack [their] knives and go.

Moreover, ChoppyChoppy revealed on Reddit that from a contestant's perspective, it did seem that "there was a particular interest in [competitors] who were hot headed and who were driving the overall storyline," adding that he or she was nixed "relatively early" after being "up against a big personality" and that "they have a bias to keeping more women on the show than need be.

The show features chefs competing against each other in culinary challenges. They are judged by a panel of professional chefs and other notables from the food and wine industry with one or more contestants eliminated in each episode.

The show has spawned multiple spin-off series, including Top Chef Mastersfeaturing established award-winning chefs; and Top Chef: Just Dessertsfeaturing pastry chefs. Another show, Top Chef Juniorfeaturing contestants in their early teens, premiered in October on Universal Kids.

Numerous international adaptations of Top Chef have also been produced. Season 17 of Top Chef premiered on March 19, Top Chef is a cooking show that uses a progressive elimination format.

The beginning of each season starts with twelve to nineteen professional chefs selected through auditions. The chefs are brought to the season's host city or state, which typically inspires themes throughout the season.

The chefs live in a provided apartment or house during the course of the season, with limited access to outside communication. Each episode, the chefs participate in a Quickfire Challenge and an Elimination Challenge described below. The winner of the Quickfire Challenge is typically granted immunity from elimination, a prize, or another benefit for the following Elimination Challenge.

The loser of the Elimination Challenge, as the name suggests, is eliminated from the competition. This format continues until two or three chefs remain. Each finalist is challenged to create a full-course meal; the chef with the best meal as determined by the judges is declared the "Top Chef" of the season. Towards the end of the season, when only four or five chefs remain, the show moves to another location to finish out the competition.

In the Quickfire Challengechefs must cook a dish that meets certain requirements for example, using specific ingredients or inspiring a certain taste or participate in a culinary-related challenge for example, a mise en place relay race or a taste testing contest.

They are usually given an hour or less to complete these tasks. The Quickfire Challenge traditionally begins with the host saying "Your time starts now" and ending with the host saying "Hands up, utensils down". Early in the season, the winning chef s are granted immunity from the episode's Elimination Challenge.

As the number of contestants dwindle, immunity is withdrawn and instead the winner receives an advantage such as being the team leader for a team challenge or getting first pick of ingredients or a prize such as chef's knives, wine, or cash. High-stakes Quickfire Challenges continued onward in further seasons.

The twelfth season of Top Chef introduced the "Sudden Death Quickfire Challenge", where the chef with the least successful dish faces immediate elimination unless they win a cook-off against another competitor.

In the Elimination Challengethe chefs prepare one or more dishes to meet the challenge requirements, which often includes a specific theme and are usually more complex and require more time to execute than a Quickfire Challenge.
