Research update

To date, more thanpeople have been diagnosed with the virus resulting in more than 30, deaths. It is believed to be primarily spread through person-to-person contact; however, concerns have risen about the possibility for fecal-oral transmission. The potential for fecal-oral transmission of COVID needs further research to define the potential implications for wastewater management, including onsite wastewater disinfection, as part of efforts to control COVID transmission.

The survival, infectivity, and concentrations remain to be confirmed. Due to the potential for this disease to spread worldwide, it is important that water sector professionals remain informed regarding ongoing information of this virus and any measures needed to protect both workers and public health in general.

Note, this message does not apply to clinical activities, only research activities. Let me start by stating that the University is not closed.

The directive allows for all research carried out remotely to continue, and in addition, for critical in-person research to continue, with additional restrictions and important requirements noted below. In accordance with these directives, we ask that the number of people working at their usual place of work be kept to a minimum. While the Stay Home, Stay Healthy directive will add some additional and enhanced restrictions, for the most part, strict adherence to advice already in place will be sufficient to maintain critical research operations.

Note, the Stay Home, Stay Healthy directive takes effect pm tomorrow, March 25, and will be in effect for 2 weeks, until pm on April 8. Every researcher who can work remotely, must stay home for the next two weeks. At the same time, the Governor has noted that research is critically important to curb the pandemic and to assist in recovery afterwards.

In many cases, that work can only continue with in-person effort. In addition, some critical in-person research functions must continue, such as maintaining animals, taking care of sensitive equipment, and monitoring for safety.

This work must be carried out by designated critical personnel, who should already be identified in your Continuity and Recovery Plans.

I encourage you to review your protocols and plan accordingly. We expect you to provide maximum flexibility to support at home work for research personnel.

At home they can conduct literature reviews, data analysis, and write papers and other documents; they can participate in lab meetings and meetings with research personnel via Zoom, conference call or other remote methods, and they can complete online training requirements for research.

There must be no expectation that personnel come to campus or to their usual workplace to conduct any research activities that can be adapted to telework. Remember, anyone who is sick must stay home. Anyone who has been in close contact with a confirmed COVID case must stay home for 14 days since their last contact with that person.

If someone showing symptoms or self-isolating is designated as critical personnel, an alternate must be identified. The goal of the Stay Home, Stay Healthy directive is to minimize the amount of close contact between people for the next two weeks. Some in-person research is still allowed, but only if it is possible to maintain appropriate safety standards :. If you cannot maintain these standards, you may not continue to operate in-person research projects and must either ramp down your research efforts to a level meeting safety standards or shut down your research entirely.

Types of in-person research that are allowed, if they can meet the safety standards noted above:. The in-person research noted above is allowed, but no research personnel may be required or pressured to come to campus or to their usual work location or go into the field, unless they are designated critical personnel, required to maintain critical operations see above. All other research personnel must be given the option to work remotely for the next two weeks see point 3 below.

Please note that the MS Research Update focuses on research related to approved and experimental medications and therapies for the long-term treatment of multiple sclerosis. It does not include information on symptom-management medications or therapies. Additionally, please be aware that due to the timing of the national and international MS conferences, study data from conferences generally could not be included in the Update.

Information in this publication includes data presented at the conferences, as well as any important updates that occurred in early Nonetheless, there is far too much ongoing research in MS therapeutics for all of it to be covered here.

2020 GRDC Grain Research Updates

As a result, this update provides a comprehensive overview, rather than an exhaustive compilation, of relevant research; not all study results could be included. The information presented is drawn from a variety of sources, including e-journal literature on MS and its management, a review of ongoing clinical trials, and papers presented at major national and international conferences.

Please note that this MS Research Update reports on the most recent study results available at the time of publication. While every effort has been made to provide meaningful, timely, and balanced information on each medication, keeping the length of information equal for each medication is not possible. Please understand that the different lengths of text should in no way be considered as favoritism toward any one product. Additionally, references have been cited only for the newer study results.

While medications for management of MS symptoms are not within the scope of this report, information on the specific symptoms of MS and their treatment is available here. By any measure — the United States Food and Drug Administration FDA approval of new medications, Phase III trials under way, expanded knowledge of the causes and course of MS, emerging treatment strategies, and many others — the last 12 months have seen great strides in the effort to better understand and more effectively manage multiple sclerosis.

This FDA action made Mayzent, a sphingosine 1-phosphate S1P receptor inhibitor, the first oral drug to treat secondary-progressive MS with active disease. Mavenclad, which is a product of EMD Serono, is given in a two-course regimen, with the initial course separated from the second course by at least 43 weeks about 10 months. This agent will offer efficacy comparable to that of Tecfidera, but with fewer of the gastrointestinal effects that sometimes are associated with Tecfidera use. Important research also is examining the optimal use and long-term efficacy and safety profiles of medications already approved by the FDA.

On a related note, a study published in the April 25, edition of The New England Journal of Medicine reported that Pembrolizumab, a type of cancer therapy called a PD-1 inhibitor, was given to eight individuals diagnosed with PML all with different underlying conditions. Improved laboratory measures of PML were seen in all eight patients.

Five of these eight individuals experienced clinical improvement or stabilization of their PML, along with additional improvements in laboratory measures, including a reduction in JC viral load and an increase in anti-JC viral activity.

The first is that the sooner the therapy is initiated following the diagnosis of MS, the more effective the medication is likely to be. As researchers are able to draw upon data encompassing several years of DMT use by thousands of people with MS, they also are able to identify patterns and trends regarding the relative impact of various agents.

Researchers drew on multi-year data for 1, patients treated at 68 neurology centers in 21 countries to examine whether initial use of particular DMTs was associated with varying degrees of risk of moving from relapsing-remitting MS to secondary-progressive MS SPMS.

The researchers concluded that initial treatment with Gilenya, Tysabri, or Lemtrada was associated with a lower risk of conversion to SPMS compared with initial use of interferon beta or glatiramer acetate. Such studies are likely to help clinicians decide which medication is best suited to the needs of individual patients. Of course, not all research yields positive findings.

The path to progress can be a winding one with many a detour and dead end. The study, sponsored by University College London, examined whether three established medications used to treat other conditions would be effective in the treatment of SPMS. The primary outcome was the percentage of brain volume change as measured on MRI. Unfortunately, none of the medications tested slowed the brain atrophy that is a hallmark of SPMS.

The findings also enable researchers to re-focus their efforts on other potentially fruitful avenues of inquiry.

Beyond traditional medications, exciting research findings have been reported in recent months in promising areas such as stem-cell therapy, dietary strategies, and attempts to affect MS by altering the composition of the gut microbiome — a key component of the immune system. Highlights from those studies also are included in this MS Research Update. Staying current with the latest findings on the medications, techniques, and avenues of inquiry in MS is challenging, and can be daunting… not only for patients and family members, but for clinicians as well.

Covid Research : A new research study by researchers from Wenzhou Medical University in Zhejiang province lead by Dr Don Chen revealed that almost all Covid patients exhibited hypokalemia and that supplementation with potassium ions was one of the many factors that assisted in their recovery. Mild low potassium does not typically cause symptoms. The study involving patients in collaboration with Wenzhou Hospital found that almost all patients exhibited hypokalemia and for those who already had hypokalemia, the situation even drastically worsened as the disease progressed.

However, it was found from the study that patients responded well to potassium ion supplements and had a better chance of recovery.
