A thrown rod in a riding lawn mower is an extremely serious breakdown that means you'll either need to replace or rebuild the mower's engine or buy a new mower. Typically due to running the mower without enough oil, a thrown rod produces symptoms you should be able to identify easily.
For the engine in a riding lawn mower to run, similar to an automobile engine, the combustion from ignited gasoline must produce enough power to push the pistons to the point where they turn the crankshaft via the piston rods that run between and connect the two parts.
When a piston rod, also known as an engine rod, breaks, it either allows the piston to become jammed at the cylinder head or the end of the broken rod penetrates the engine block. Either is a catastrophe for the riding mower's engine. Rhythmic knocking is often the first sign something is wrong with the rods in the engine of a riding lawn mower.
It might make a clacking, clanging or banging sound. As you rev the engine, the frequency of the knocking increases. Once this noise starts, you need to turn off the mower and stop using it. The rod may break at any time and shoot through the piston head at a high rate of speed.
This could be dangerous for anyone nearby. Even if you've added oil to your riding lawn mower recently, it may be too late if you've driven the mower for too long with little or no oil. Oil that is black and has a scorched smell is one indication of a thrown rod. Low oil pressure is another potential symptom. The burning oil may cause black smoke to emerge from the riding mower's exhaust and clue you in to potential problems.
What Are the Symptoms of a Thrown Rod in a Riding Lawn Mower?
Oil may also leak from the piston covers. The best thing you can do to keep your riding mower running well is to maintain the engine correctly. Maintaining the engine means ensuring you use the proper type of oil recommended by the manufacturer and keeping it at the appropriate level. Allowing the mower to run out of oil or overfilling it can lead to significant engine problems.
Topping up oil levels isn't enough -- it's crucial you change the oil as often as recommended by the manufacturer. You'll usually need to change the oil after a certain number of hours of operation to prevent the dirty oil from damaging the internal parts of the engine. Amie Taylor has been a writer since Book reviews, gardening and outdoor lawn equipment repair articles and short fiction account for a handful of her published works.I hit a rock while I was cutting the grass, now the lawn mower when its running is making a loud clanking sound.
The blade is not hitting the deck underneath. It seems like it is from engine. When I pull the rope I hear a clank. Any ideas. I have a similiar problem - not sure if it is exactly the same.
You may be in a better situation. There is a rod underneath that connects to the blade. It is likely that this rod has been knocked out of place warped.
It leads to the clanking sound and vibration. That is depending upon how big the rock was and how much damage it was able to do. Check to see if it vibrates a lot when you start it. If it does as well then the rod might be bent out of place. I checked with my warranty people and they reffered me to a local shop. At the local lawnmower repair shop he stated that this repair would not be in the warranty since it is considered neglect and not normal wear and tear. I got similiar information from the Home Depot Manager - he was not sure if that was the case but he did cover it with me.
The guy at the repair shop stated that it was not worth fixing. That I might as well go and buy another mower. My blade is not hitting - I did put a new blade on since the old blade was warped. Which of course increased the vibration making it much worse - really showing me the problem. Remove the spark plug wire and double check the blade. I would drain the oil out of it so that I could turn it over and get a better look.
As you pull the starter rope, watch the crankshaft and see if it is turning true. It is possible that you sheared the flywheel key also. You will have to remove the cowling and flywheel nut, there will be two keyways and they must be aligned, if not remove the flywheel and replace the key.

I checked the blade housing and it's okay but the sound is coming from within the engine itself.
Any ideas on what this may be? Thanks guys. Inspect the blade for obvious bends and breaks. Using a wrench check that the blade is tight. While the mower is on it's side rotate the blade by hand to see thatthat it rotates in a flat plane.
Carefully check inide the cutting housing for any signes of contact with the blade. Be sure to check around the grass chute as some parts will be fairly close to the blade.
I'm sure you know this, but before attempting any inspection be sure to remove the sparkplug wire from the plug. You could be describing lots of things. Worst case, it's getting ready to throw a rod. Have you checked the oil? It might be helpful if you posted the make, model and type numbers of the engine. It runs fine. I mean I get the same sound regardless if the blade is engaged or not. I've already checked the entire blade housing and the sound is coming from within the engine itself When I say the engine runs fine I just mean that it starts and runs around but is so loud that the neighbors come out asking if I'm alright because the noise is so loud.
Does the noise occur at an idle? Is the noise rotational - does it increase with engine speed? With the engine at an idle try running the speed up rapidly. A loose con rod bearing will usually give a much sharper rapping sound under those conditions.
Well wackylawnmowerman you still did not post the make and model number of the engine. It may surprise you to know Craftsman used more than one 10 hp engine. Craftsman 10 hp 5 speed doesn't tell anything.
By the way, a noise loud enough to bring people out of the house to see if you are OK is not a connecting rod, it would have been gone long ago. Perhaps something in the starter mechanism is hanging up? If so, it will manifest itself into a no-start condition soon.
If I run it, the tapping gets louder. The blade is not bent or anything. It started when I was mowing a lawn without hitting anything. Sign In.Explore other articles on this topic. The clicking noise comes from a part called the starter solenoid.
The solenoid connects the battery to the starter motor when the solenoid is energized. The key switch and the safety switches in the starter circuit combine to energize the solenoid. If the solenoid is clicking, the circuit that triggers it is working.Proxy portal list

Thread starter GreenGiant94 Start date Nov 6, Location Charlotte, NC. Hey, I was using my mower earlier this week and after a couple hours of use it started acting up.
It was making a really fast clicking noise. The faster the idle speed the faster the noise got. A few days before this, I ended up putting too much oil in the engine but then i think i fixed that problem shortly after. Would this cause any problems?Create ssl account
Maybe it wasn't running long enough for the noise to start. Any info would be great, thanks. Location Lower Slower Delaware. How to activate gsx level 2

So now every time you start the engine their is a loud clanging noise and it goes way after the engine runs for maybe a second or two. If it is the engine and not some issue with the mower deck, what could cause this initial noise that then goes a way fairly quick?

Now the engine runs fine. I will keep the above in mind and check these things out.
But the main thing is I am hoping the issue is not a connecting rod or some other internal engine part. And the replies thus far indicate, 'no not an internal engine part' - a good thing. Thanks again, Jim. JimP said:. Carscw Lawn Pro.
